Valerie Mukangerero (53 yrs) works in her pinapple farm in Rwamurema village, Eastern Rwanda, Kirehe District. Since joining the Tuzamurane cooperative, Valerie feels very empowered and has saved enough money to buy a cow and support her family. She joined the co-operative six years ago. Before joining she and her husband had six children and struggled to provide them with resources such as enough food and health insurance. With the money she has been able to extend her house and buy a cow.
"The challenges I was facing were ones of poverty and not enough resources. Before joining the cooperative, my life was not good. I felt it was short and that there was no vision.
"When I joined the cooperative, we were trained, we learned and I felt relieved that I would have a good life one day. I was going to change my life.
"I feel proud that people respect me and say ‘that woman is on top!’. The thing that makes me most happy is that I have joined others and when I earn money, I feel happy. I buy things that I need with no worry inside myself."
